Nacreous clam : Náyades

Imagen
We are all part of an ecosystem, and we think we know everything about life around us. But she takes different forms, it is often mysterious ...   The   nacreous clams of the hydric system of Rio de la Plata   are an example of this.  These clams are  native. They live in freshwater. They are large, and its outer surface is covered by a dark layer,   but they have a very beautiful inner nacre layer. They live in our ecosystem, buried in the sandy mud of unpolluted waterways, and part of their life cycle are parasites of   fishes .  In the early 50's they were used to make  buttons.  Today they are threatened by pollution, overfishing and the presence of invasive species that compete for their habitat. Origin of the name Conchitas

Imagen
T he names are lost in the swirl of time, and in a vast nearly untouched pampa ...  The name :  Shells appears in property  titles to the area near the stream since late 1700. Historians say  that the origin of the name is due to the abundance of shells in the area and also the exploitation of them for use as calcium oxide. But, today there is no trace of these shells, nor abandoned quarries where excavations were made.  However, there is an important fact to consider, in clean waterways of the Rio de la Plata are bivalves. These freshwater bivalves live buried in the mud and leave their shells to die. Perhaps there were  existed in other  time in this area, and giving rise to the name Shells. The stream "Las conchitas" is born behind Hudson birthplace , in a few miles  empties into the Río de la Plata at the village called Platanos.  Recently, the 04/21/2014 was found a Berardiusarnexii whale  on the banks in the lower stream .  It is a kind of whale from very cold and deep water, also called Whale Arnoux Antarctic ; little is known about it. It presented a robust tubular body 6 tons. It was 6.5 meters long,  dark gray, with a prominent forehead, a long and thin snout. In the lower jaw had two pairs of teeth.  Surely, it departed from his group, lost his way and entered the estuary of Río de la Plata favored by the wind from the southeast sector. Scientists at the Natural History Museum of La Plata will study it and will give an answer. R...

The hummingbird song

Imagen
These beautiful birds, the hummingbirds, are still visiting me. I like to observe them : their speed and grace. They become a flying rainbow. From time I watch them, I found a surprise : they sing. They like to do on top of an old  plum tree. They sing early  in the morning or at sunset. A man also heard a hummingbird singing and made a video.
